The city was granted its charter in 1870. During the Gold Rush days, Baker City was the center of activity and supported several nearby gold mining towns. Baker City is in Baker County, which includes part of the Snake River and the Oregon Trail, the Hells Canyon National Scenic Byway, and the southern end of the Hells Canyon itself, the deepest river carved gorge in North America.
